1. Pick your room

2. Wall sizes and shapes
Don't fill every free wall with art. Decide where to hang art and where to keep it clear. Look at your furniture and the shape of the wall space around it. Prime locations for a larger piece of art might be above a low backed sofa or a dining table. Higher cabinets fill the wall space so there's no need to place art near one.
3. Make your room seem bigger
Strong vertical lines in the artwork, frame or wall arrangement can add a sense of height in a room. Horizontal lines give the illusion of width so are best for narrow rooms.
4. Water allergy
High humidity or water leakage potential in a room? Do not, we plead, hang paintings here. Be wary of hanging art in the bathroom, small kitchens, basements, by un-insulated exterior walls, above radiators and in the immediate vicinity of humidifiers, vaporisers or air vents. Keep art at a constant room temperature (between 18 and 25°C).
5. Let's focus
It's imperative to consider the central hanging point in each room. This is normally at the average person's eye level - about 160cm from the floor, unless you have very high ceilings in your home. Hang work so that the centre of each piece sits at this point, meaning all the pictures will look consistent with each other, no matter what their size.
6. Group little 'uns together
Hang small works together, either in a regimented order such as in rows, or in a cluster. The central hanging point should lie in the centre of the group so they are seen as a whole and look consistent beside other works in a room.
7. Fixtures and fittings
Most professionally framed work will have either string or wire already attached to the frame's backing. If stringing the frame yourself, ensure you tie the knots securely. Unframed canvases look best hung flush against the wall: secure two nails or screws (depending on the wall) at identical heights and half the width of the work apart into the wall. They should stick out of the wall about 3cm. Your painting will sit flush and secure against the wall.
8. Use picture hooks for framed work

9. Light up
Reach your art's full potential with picture lights. Invest in daylight bulbs, like galleries do. Ultraviolet light found in sunlight and artificial lights can damage sensitive artwork. Even if your frame includes special UV-filtering glass, it should never be hung in direct or bright indirect sunlight. Ordinary incandescent light bulbs are safer than fluorescent or halogen bulbs.
10. Clean your art
A soft cloth should be used to wipe over frames, and a soft brush for paintings. Cleaning products contain harsh chemicals and should not be used for art.
