How do I find an artist?

I have a painting that my mother purchased from an art show in the 70s. She actually tried to put it on the curb once, and I snatched it up. It's been in every home I've lived in my whole life, and I have an odd connection to it. It was purchased here in Ohio. It is a tribal scene, oil on canvas in a hideous gold frame with green "vines" of some sort painted on it. It is signed "F. Pierce." I have googled and searched for this painter, to no avail. I am assuming it was done by some no-name artist who probably never made a living from his/her work. But it's beautiful and very detailed. I would love to find the artist. Anyone???

Go to the Library and start looking in Art reference books. Also you can go to a local art gallery and start asking
