Sometimes it's not the getting there, but the journey. And that is not an original thought, it is really quite Zen. Keep that in mind the next time you find yourself passing through Lille, France.
Lille lies along the Deule River and is the transit zone people pass through enroute to Paris, London, or Belgium. If you are headed to any of the three, do try to plan a weekend in Lille, or else spontaneously spend a day or two here. You will still get to your final destination, as in Lille there is the Eurostar that heads straight to London, and lots of trains to Paris, or cities in Belgium such as Brussels, Gent, and Bruges.
Why Lille?
Lille is one city that takes an earnest attitude to culture. There are many museums worth seeing, and the old and preserved Flemish architecture that prevails in Vieille Ville is grasping. The music and arts scene is full of activity, the food is amazing, and the night life is crazy. Spending a weekend in Lille is tres au courant these days.
The Palais des Beaux-Arts has an amazing and sizeable permanent collection of art, which is why it is ranked second only to the Louvre in France. Among others, you can expect to find the works of Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya, Delacroix, Raphael, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rembrandt, and Rodin. Of particular interest are relief maps that were used by Kings in times of war.
Another interesting museum is the Charles de Gaulle Birthplace and Museum. The original birth home of the former French President, one gets the feel of a typical middle class home in the 19th century. Family mementos and souvenirs are displayed here, as are personal tokens and objects. Included are De Gaulle's cradle and other paraphernalia of his youth. A multimedia center chronicles his work as a statesman.
Vieille Ville (Old Town) is so called because of its 17th century narrow and winding cobblestone roads, antique shops, a Gothic cathedral, and well preserved Flemish townhouses and buildings. There are a lot of charming restaurants and cafes here.
If you love jazz, you will love Lille, as this musical genre prevails. There are a lot of art events, and a selection of music shows. Consult their newspaper La Voix du Nord, or their magazine Sortir, where you will find listings.
There are many restaurants in Lille, and the servings are always large and plentiful. The cuisine is a blend of French and Flemish gastronomy. When you have had your fill, you can try a slice of the night life. Bars are plentiful along Rue de Paris, and there are trendy clubs on rue Basse and place Louise-de-Bettignies. Younger people congregate along rue Massena. There are several gay bars in Lille, too.
Best For Last
We have saved the best part of Lille for last—namely, its yearly Braderie, a 48 hour celebration held every first weekend of September. This is when the whole city is like a carnival, and everyone, professional or not, can set up stalls of second hand goods—arts, ceramics, knick-knacks, crafts, clothes, et al along the sidewalks. It is expected that you should bargain hard with each purchase. Amid all this, there are concerts, dance performances, and theatre shows. An interesting custom of the Braderie is that beside every restaurant are big piles of mussel shells, as this city loves Moules Frites. The reason for these piles is that restaurants are competing to see which one has the biggest piles, ergo sold the most mussels and fries.
Lille may be essentially a transit town with a crazy nightlife and unique celebrations, but don't be fooled--some important scientists were born here like Louis Pasteur who pioneered vaccines and the pasteurization process; Albert Calmette and Camille Guerin who discovered the anti-tuberculosis vaccine; and physics Nobel prize winner Jean Baptiste Perrin.
So take time to stop by Lille, and try to make sense of seeming contradictions. It may ultimately be meaningful madness. Or better yet, don't think—just experience its sweet surprises. Do as the tres au courant or those in the know, do, partake in Lille's joie de vivre.
