Just 25 minutes north of Manhattan, Yonkers is often overlooked as a booming suburb rich in culture and diversity. With a picturesque Downtown waterfront, convenient MTA access and an influx of high-end dining and shopping, Yonkers is burgeoning. And now, with New York City real estate prices on the rise, Manhattanites are beginning to embrace the luxuries of living "Upstate".
Living in Yonkers
In October, Westchester Magazine named Yonkers one of the "Best Places to Live" in Westchester County. In 2007, CNN Money also put Yonkers on the national list of Best Places to Live. With the construction of Monarch at Ridge Hill, the suburb is sure to claim the title as the best place to live outside of NYC. Monarch, a New Urbanism housing development built atop the luxury Ridge Hill lifestyle center, will feature 500 one and two-bedroom condominiums and is expected to launch in 2011.
Monarch, in a push to improve the environment, will house carpool pickup areas and on-site bicycle storage in addition to their use of green materials during development. Luxury amenities of the complex include an indoor lap pool, basketball court, 24-hour doorman services and a resident's lounge.
Another perk for families considering the move to Yonkers? Yonkers High School was named #37 on
"America's Best High Schools" list by U.S. News & World Report in 2008.
Working in Yonkers
Between the evolution of the Downtown Waterfront and the future development of new office complexes, there is promise for the job market in Yonkers. Never fear, city slickers! Just hop on the Hudson Line from Yonkers Station and arrive in Grand Central Station in less than half an hour. The MTA allows commuters an escape from bumper-to-bumper traffic and the never-ending fight for parking.
Playing in Yonkers
You don't have to spend the day on 5th Avenue to assuage your luxury shopping needs. According to LoHud, luxury retailer Lord and Taylor recently announced their plan to open their first new store in over a decade at the Ridge Hill shopping center. Lord and Taylor will also be joined by big names such as Sephora and Republic of Couture.
The dining is just as multifaceted as the shopping, with hidden gems like Belle Havana and the newly opened Dolphin Restaurant on the Waterfront. Belle Havana serves up mouthwatering Cuban French cuisine inspired by Chef Alexandre Cheblal and was highlighted on the 2008 Best of Westchester list. Dolphin, which just opened in July, is a seafood restaurant located on the river that utilizes local ingredients hand-picked by Executive Chef David Hubert.
If it's the nightlife you're interested in, Dolphin also doubles as a bar and lounge with an extensive wine list and selection of vodkas. For a more low-key atmosphere, scoot on over to Frog on McLean Ave for the 'Best Martini in Yonkers'. Weekends are your best bet for live music if you stop by Burke's Restaurant and Bar—their website also hosts a list of upcoming shows and events.
From employment and education to shopping and dining, Yonkers has something for everyone. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the luxuries of Manhattan combined with the ease of Upstate living.
