Enjoying Aberdeen, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland is simple because this - the third largest of all the cities in the country - is so easy to like and appreciate. In actuality, Aberdeen is its own local government area, though it sits in the Aberdeenshire local government area from which Aberdeen draws its name. But that hardly matters to a local Scott.
Aberdeen currently enjoys a population of about 203,000 people. Sitting in magnificent splendor on the northeast Scottish coast, the city boasts a wealth of culture and history. One of its two major universities, in fact, was founded in 1495, and there is evidence of settlement in the area going back over 8,000 years. It also played an active role in the Wars of Scottish Independence, in the early 14th century.
The region is awash in tradition, with the Scottish king, Robert I (more popularly known as Robert the Bruce) granting Aberdeen Royal Burgh status in 1319. Traditional activities such as fishing and shipbuilding now mingle collegially with its very active North Sea oil industry and the city's seaport economic activities. Aberdeen is also the product of two cities in the area, Old Aberdeen and of course, New Aberdeen.
Aberdeen's nickname, "the Granite City," is a testament to the locally quarried granite stones - embedded with sparkly flecks of mica - upon which many of the buildings were built in the 18th to 20th centuries, from the middle part of the 1700s to the mid-parts of the 1900s. The earliest known charter was granted by William the Lion, King of the Scots, in 1179.
Though it is its own local government area, the city of Aberdeen plays host to the Aberdeenshire Council, which is the governing body of Aberdeenshire. This council has its headquarters at Woodhill House, in the city. For true Scottish heritage and history, it's tough to top a tour of Aberdeen, Scotland.
