A Murderous Song
Just ask yourself this question – What is Nick Cave famous for? If I had been asked that question 4:05 minutes ago I would have answered, 'Who? What?' Surprisingly, as a person who is admitably very keen to know who's who and what's what, in this instant I cant help but wish I had used those precious 4:05 minutes to do anything but watch 'Where the wild roses grow'.
'Where the wild roses grow', written by pop singer-songwriter Nick Cave, featuring vocalist Kylie Minogue, is just one of those songs in which you feel the greatest sympathy for those who's livelihoods depend on its success. Although the song was a great success among the critics in general, I find myself pondering, is it because it is a 'truly remarkable tale, illustrated with one of the most artistic music videos around' or is it frankly just one of Nick Cave's better songs? It is better I'll admit, if I were to compare it to his normal psychotic drivel.
Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue, honestly? I can't begin to imagine what was going through either of the musician's obviously confused minds, when they decided to make the song. I'll be the first to agree that the pair's vocal styles have re-established the meaning of contrast. However, as a musician I know musical boundaries are made to be pushed, but I worry that 'Where the wild roses grow' takes it too far! It sounds to me like two completely unlinked pieces of music being thrown at me, both trying, and failing to convince me they work together.
The music video itself is not a tragedy, but I'm not about to award any medals any time soon. It seams to drift from areas of quality artistic imagery to theatrical tackiness. For instance the link to Millais' Ophelia, where Kylie is shown lying in the water mimicking the image shown in the painting, whilst incorporating a contemporary setting. The strong artistic beauty of the shot almost changed my opinion of the video, but as we all know one can't overlook the unavoidable repelling qualities of the greater half of the music video.
One of the scenes that force me to feel such resentment towards the video, is the shot showing a rabbit sniffing at the woman's leg. I applaud those responsible for making this scene for compelling me to feel anything but distaste for the entire creation. However I am certain that laughter was not the reaction they had in mind. The scene makes no sense to me. Apparently, it is intended to symbolise the curiosity of Kylie's character concerning the reasons behind 'The Wild Rose' replacing her real name. Although this appears logical, I can't help but giggle at how simply ridiculous it looks. A rabbit? I'm sure they could have been more selective with their choice, and maybe, just maybe considered that a loveable pet in a song about a murder might just look daft.
Although the song and video were both distasteful and are a pleasure to unleash my criticism upon, it was a great success when it was released to the public's eyes and ears. I still find it difficult to believe that such a highly acclaimed pop star such as Kylie, know for her uncontrollably catchy feel-good tracks, would record such a morbid and dark song. Was Kylie's popularity and wide appeal used by fellow Australian Nick Cave to make money? As I'm sure you know a lot of music videos today have only one use, making yet more money. Was Kylie's involvement in 'Where the wild roses grow' a way of dragging Nick Cave's hideously unattractive lyrics and lifeless melody to the charts? I'll leave that for you to decide, but I don't believe that the song would have done nearly as well as it did if an unknown vocalist was used in her place.
Maybe there is a benefit to the creation of this song. That is however a demonstration of what musically should never be attempted. I stand by my view that this video was created to say "Look Kylie Minogue! That means this must be a good song!" .However as the 4:05 minuets of my life wasted that could have been put to better uses suggest, the music video is quite simply a failure. I urge you to not make the mistake I did, and avoid the misfortune of watching such a ludicrously distasteful music video as "Where the wild roses grow".
