When one thinks of Holland, we picture a city of canals and bridges, known for its Van Gogh Museum and many coffee shops. While this is definitely one side of Amsterdam that should not be missed, there is another face of this city that is present in the many offbeat attractions that are available for tourists in the city. This guide is for those travellers who like doing things a bit differently.

1. The Amsterdam History Museum – This museum is located in the heart of the city, but remains unnoticed by many tourists. This Amsterdam History Museum has some of the best displays in the city. It is also quite large, which means that it can easily take a few hours to have a complete tour of the museum.

2. Flower Auction – This is a daily affair that takes place early in the morning on grounds close to the airport, a little away from the center of the city. The flower auction is a colourful and fragrant sight that must not be missed, and is known for the many varieties of tulips and other types of cut flowers that pass through it every day. To get to the auction, it is possible to take a bus to the market from Amsterdam city.

3. Café de Doffer – this traditional café is located in the heart of the city and is one attraction that visitors to Amsterdam must not miss. It is located in the Negen Straatjes district and serves some of the most delicious coffees and pastries in the city and tourists are sure to enjoy a trip here.

4. The Tulip Museum – Everyone associates Amsterdam with tulips, but very few visitors actually go that extra mile to visit this museum. The Tulip museum offers visitors a chance to see the various kinds of tulips that are grown across the world and to also learn about the history of tulips in Holland and the history of the Tulip Craze. This museum is located inside a flower shop in the heart of Amsterdam.

5. Oost – This is the Islamic quarter of the city, where there are a number of places to visit like a zoo and a park. This area also offers tourists some incredible eateries which serve up Arabian delicacies. The Oost area is another one of the lesser known attractions in the city, which means that it is usually not very crowded.
