Actually, I didn't forget my password, I lost it. Last week, I spent twenty minutes going through little scraps of paper, sticky notes and insides of file folders looking for my password to a membership site I signed up for two weeks ago. I couldn't find it. How am I going to make money online if I'm wasting time looking for passwords? Since then, I've spent more time looking for lost passwords when I should be looking for ways to make money online.
Has this happened to you, too? I've tried to stay organized, but there are so many great sites and things I want to do online with a home based business, that it's easy to get lost in the maze of information.
One thing I know for sure, is that it's much easier to earn cash online if you are organized and efficient. I've actually tried to create a system for remembering my passwords. I have a folder in my file cabinet labeled "passwords". At one point last year I typed and printed up some of the passwords I use often. In addition to that, I keep those little scraps of paper, and sticky notes in the folder too, as well as write on the typewritten page by hand new passwords as I create them. That's a start.
But, I realized this morning after another twenty-minute search, that I need one place to keep all the passwords so that I never waste my time again.
And, I need to create a back up, too, so I never lose another password.
I'm happy to say that I've come up with a plan and I'd like to share it with you.
Here are 10 simple steps to organizing your passwords forever:
1. Make a commitment to yourself to dedicate one hour to organize your passwords.
2. Clear off your desk and spread out every piece of paper with a password or link on it.
3. Organize them according to categories: Money,WebBiz,etc.
4. Open an excel worksheet and type one category in the top cell of a different page for each category. Each separate page will be devoted to a category.
5. Then, put a different color in the background of each category cell. The font will be black and the background will be the color.
(I like to categorize things by color. It's easy to group them together.)
Here are a few of my categories:
Money – Green.
This category includes online banking, credit cards, Paypal, clickbank, cbengine, commission junction, paydotcom.com, adsense, etc.
Anything related to bringing me money.
Email Accounts – Yellow
Email, computer passwords, Twitter, Blogger, Wordpress etc.
Web Biz – Purple
This includes, hosting accounts, domain accounts, software, coaching programs, and any kind of Internet business information and home business sites.
Social Networking - Blue
Twitter, facebook, digg, etc.
Personal - Orange
Airlines, Amtrak, Expedia, Amazon, Orbitz, AAA, AT&T, etc.
6. Next, make columns for each page:
Location (url) Username Password Hint/Pin
7. Then, take a break.
8. Back from the break, take time to find all the information you have for each category. (It took less than an hour for me to type this information into the cells.)
9. Create a folder marked Passwords. File > Save.
10. Print a hard copy to keep in a folder on your desk.
You can now simply add any new information or delete old passwords and place the new ones in the correct space.
Believe me, this feels great! I have the hard copy in that old folder in my file cabinet. I threw out all the scraps and sticky notes. Everything is new and clean. As I create more accounts with passwords, I'll just change it on the digital copy and add it by hand to the hard copy. Eventually, I will print out a fresh hard copy of my password list.
Make the commitment to do this for yourself. It takes a little time, but will save you time and frustration in the future.
